River Rats: River Boats & Huck Finn Fishing Portland, Oregon

Boat CampNot a sound anywheres – perfectly still – just like the whole world was asleep, only sometimes the bullfrogs a-cluttering, maybe. -The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain

River Life

Life on the river is simple, sometimes tough and definitely full of adventure. In this camp the Trackers Mariners Guild takes you on a journey navigating currents and the lazy ebb of the Great River. We delve into the stories of Mark Twain and other tales. We visit the falls of Oregon City and learn about the fascinating old timey history of the Willamette River. We meet local Portland Pirates who may no longer board and raid ships but they do awesome pirate things such as speak pirate English fluently and play fabulous pirate games.

The Portland Steamer

This camps features a tour of the paddle wheel propelled “Portland Steamer Tugboat". The last steam-powered, sternwheel tugboat to be built in the United States, this vessel also serves as the Oregon Maritime Museum.

Portland Steamboat

Raftin', Fishin' and Campfire Cookin'

We build a simple raft and try out other river going vessels, including the Trackers canoes. We also make Huck Finn style poles and do plenty of lazy fishin' for all manner of watery beasts that we fry, roast and eat then and there over our campfire. And if you don't love fish, we also will cook up some fine flapjacks on the friddle and biscuits in the dutch oven.

So join us for the ultimate Mark Twain, Halley's comet, Huck Finn, turn of the century, River Pirate adventure!
