Portland, Oregon Improvisational Theater for Kids

Creativity is an attitude, a way of looking at something, a way of questioning, perhaps a way of life – it may well be found on paths we have not yet traveled. -Viola Spolin, Improvisation for the Theater

Why do we play? We play for enjoyment, entertainment, and fun, but we also play to learn. When we play together, we learn to trust each other. It takes a brave person to risk looking silly in a group of others, and it happens all too soon that we grow into rigid, uncompromising individuals who are too afraid to try new things for fear of what people might think.

Improvisational Theater provides an outlet for individuality as well as an inlet for creative collaboration.
This program is designed to fulfill the requirement of play inherent in all of us from birth. It introduces students to the art of improvisational performance through the structured playing of games, physical activities, and creative movement exercises. Participation in this program develops a student's ability to explore choices of action on stage by establishing and maintaining a focus on theatrical play, encouraging students to view improvisation as a life-enhancing experience extending beyond the classroom/workshop space.

You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than you can in a year of conversation. –Plato

Are you an Artisan?

ArtisanThe Artisans are theater, music and fine crafts folk. Their trade and circus opens our eyes to both noble purpose and subtle, quiet reflection. They carry the stories that remind us of where we've been and connect us to visions of where we are going. They tell the tales that reveal to us who we truly are.

The Artisans are our Storykeepers, travelers bare-of-foot, walking and sleeping under the twilight sky. They evoke drama and humor born by living root in the land. They recall a timeless grief and praise from the very stars above. Their gift is played in celebrations marking the seasons for the children in our stead, asking the moments between these festivals to be filled with a fantastic passion for the day to day of life.

The Remembering is here. Our Story is one of love, forgetting, and an unknown future. This haze we walk through must be assailed. These fears with which we burden ourselves must be shaken loose. At center stage is our very survival, and the choices we make will soon become the Story we Remember.
