Trackers PDX Blog

These four banners stand 6-feet tall at the Scout Pit. Nearly every other day I hear conversations similar to that of two 9-year old girls from last week's camp…

"Out of all these, who do you want to be?"

The other camper surveys them, then lifts her finger to emphatically point at the woman in natural camouflage, arrow dawn, intensive focus while stealthily moving through a forest of green. "I want to be her. I'm definitely a Ranger."

Take a good look at that picture. Ask yourself if you want your daughters (and sons) to grow up to be Rangers. I said in another blog that at our core "hunter-gatherers hold council." I know this statement may beg for a more in-depth explanation and I'm more than happy to share the full tale with anyone who asks.

There are plenty of other outdoor education organizations with a priority on gear, games, contemporary environmentalism, edutainment and simply science. There are plenty of camps with a more utopian and modern ethos. We're not them. We are the folks who work directly from more than 500,000 years of human history and connection to the land. We are cultivators, foragers, circus performers and an old, old lineage of trackers. We are "wilding" the world one kid at a time.

Is this a good match for your family? Is your child a Ranger, Wilder, Artisan or Mariner?

BTW, I realize the picture of the Mariner is slightly edgy, though what else can we realistically expect from Ernie, our Giant Norwegian sailor/fisherman who holds a curmudgeony scowl and a heart of gold?
