Remember
30th
March

I was 15 when I first began working with children. My mother, Louise Marie Deis, gave me sage advice in my first days as an educator…

Remember what it's like to be a kid.

She didn't mean the saccharin version of childhood perpetuated by mainstream culture. She meant the splintered, hands dirty, crazy play sewn into the reality of growing up. She was talking about the hours I spent hammering together a raft, the giant holes dug for dinosaur bones and the filbert shoot bows we would craft for action arrow wars in our backyard.

This empathy she passed to me has dramatically informed how I teach and it has especially defined and shaped Trackers.

How does The Code of Louise fit into your life? As a parent, a teacher or even simply a role model, where do you find value in reflecting on your own childhood?
