Why These Skills24thMarch
Everyday I ask myself, "Why these skills?" Why do we dedicate ourselves to relearning ancient arts of wilderness living, homesteading, awareness and nature connection?
I know how I first started down this path. I was raised in a family that offered great care in tending to its relationships. And I saw that the society I expected to grow up and join did not respect those same values.
I understood that the ecology of family is rooted in the ecology of nature. If I wanted to shape a world of deep connections, if I wanted my life to be simple and healthy, than I needed to find my livelihood in the land itself. I decided to change what I knew about the tenants of human survival: shelter, water, fire and food. I decided to wild my life.
Why are you wilding through these skills? Send me your thoughts, I would love to know.

These skills bring me into relationship with the more-than-human world. The human-centric world is where I learn what it means to be Dan and not Chris or Jon. In the more-than-human world I learn what it means to be human and not a squirrel or a fern. These skills allow me to touch something real, and derive meaning that can be found nowhere else. |
