Where Wild Kids Roam
24th
February

What's it like to be a kid in the Village? You have work to do, play to work at and adults to emulate.  You have forests to explore, creeks to walk and frogs to catch. You have bows to make from hazelnut shoots, berries to pick and chickens to corral.

In the Village, morning follows the natural rhythms of the seasonal harvest and sunrise. When kids press fall cider, the line between chores and play is blurred. When they shovel old hay out of the goat barn, it becomes quite distinct.

Children naturally gravitate towards one particular tree or a certain mossy patch where they prefer to sit. They naturally want to make poles to catch fish. When we ask them to do this at a camp, even if they enjoy it, it's still a task set by a teacher. When kids are able wander up to the cedar or pond and think about something for a good long while, that's magic.

I'm not saying this is how it should be. I am saying it's certainly how it could be. This Shangri-la can take place in the country, wilds and an urban block of fenceless houses, yet these Villages must have one thing in common: adults who children can simply watch go about their day. This role modeling offers daily reminders of what it means to grow up. This vision and these heroes send a message of fidelity and care for family, hearth and land.
