The Theater of Camp10thDecember
When I was a kid I wanted to be a filmmaker. I saw Star Wars, Indiana Jones and the Right Stuff one to many times. Today I'm not to shabby with a video camera yet my passion for epic story found an entirely different venue.
Kids fair just fine playing on their own and teaching one another, especially in the wilds. All they really need to round out this innate drive for learning is an adult who occasionally asks good questions. So why can't all our kids just be Christopher Robin roaming the Hundred Acre Woods? When is an adult led adventure ever useful?
Answer: When camp is like theater.
While safety is our priority, this is a baseline. The measure of a good camp is giving kids the opportunity to do things they could never do on their own. While the measure of a great camp is journeying to places and ideas kids never imagined were possible! When I plan camps I think about what I desperately wished to do at 4, 6 or 9 years of age and then, I take it up a notch.
That's not to say that our camps are only like a movie or a night at the theater. Films and stage plays are mostly passive. Our camps are simply the elements of an adventurous story, its up to the kids remake that world into whate inspires them the most.
