Trackers RealityTV
2nd
October

Whenever Molly (my wife) turns on the reality TV show Project Runway I secretly love to watch it. My interest doesn't lie in the faux drama of competition or conflict the producers obviously ramp up. No, its in the craft and art.

On the show they're given a task with limited materials. They may have make high fashion from curtains or design a dress on a budget. To me its innately human to see great creativity stem from what some many perceive as limits. I remember when the show Survivor first aired I was hoping to see participants working together, discovering what they were capable of as hunter-gatherers. Unfortunately the manufactured drama of that venture was and still is intolerable. The real potential beauty could have been the simple equation of "naturally challenging circumstance + creativity = epic".

I like Project Runway for the same reason I like Junkyard Wars, for the same reason I loved MacGyver and the last half of the A-Team (where they built giant and glorious contraption). I'm inspired by the innovation of others because the best kind of genius is contagious. DIY (do it yourself) is actually the million year old tale of being human. The most beautiful creations are born out of urgent need and local resources. That's the life of a hunter-gatherer. Its also been the story of my own life and the people I call my tribe. I dare to say that winners and losers can be a mute point to the success of reality TV. I actually believe that viewers tune in to see others create art, invent, dance well, survive and even work (dare I say) together in a village.
